It is not easy, but with time and knowledge you can become an expert and create a beautiful garden.
Starting a garden or maintaining one is both an artful and a scientific undertaking. It is not easy, but with time and knowledge you can become an expert and create a beautiful garden. Rio consulted expert horticulturist, Jose Luis Cantu, who has over 30 years of experience in hands-on gardening and is the owner of Cantu Garden Center in Laredo for some inside information. Use our guide to maintain a healthy and blooming garden with these tips provided by Cantu.
-Prune all the plants and trees. If you harm your plant by accident, do not worry; the season helps it recover fast.
-Prepare the soil. The more you can do to keep your soil healthy, the more productive your garden will be. Add garden soil for minerals and the region’s fertilizer 15510; mix it with ammonium fertilizer 21-0-0 and add a pest control. This should be applied 2 or 3 times a year for large plants such as grass and trees. For houseplants, apply Osmocote fertilizer every three weeks so that they are continuously blooming.
-Do not water your plants everyday. It is recommended to water them only 3-4 times per week. If your soil is humid, do not add water. For houseplants, add water only twice per week.
-Rotate your houseplants every 15 days to expose the other side of the plants to the sun so that they receive equal light from all sides.
-Irrigation systems are restricted to water only three days per week in Laredo. You can use your water hose everyday if needed and its not penalized. But, leaving a sprinkler on is illegal.
